Foundational Wisdom

Michael Leddy, translating an inscription found on a 19th century building:

One contemplates it
Another laughs at it
The third despises it
Who cares

It, in this case, is the house on which the text1 is written. More research by Leddy turns up other sources, the earliest from 1330, and all basically state the same: “This is my work, and I don’t care what you think of it.” — Ages-old wisdom, still relevant for today’s creatives.
